Real-Time vs USB Data Loggers: Which Fits Your Cold Chain?
Both record temperature. One tells you mid-flight, the other tells you on arrival. A side-by-side comparison of 4G real-time loggers and USB plug-and-read loggers — cost, workflow, alerts and where ea
Every cold chain team eventually faces the same fork in the road: stream the data live, or read it at destination. Both approaches produce a defensible temperature record. The difference is when you learn about a problem — and whether you can still do something about it.
How 4G real-time loggers work
A real-time logger measures temperature and humidity inside the shipment and uploads readings to a cloud platform over the global 4G network. Location comes from LBS or multi-mode positioning. Set alarm thresholds before start-up and the platform pushes email and app alerts the moment a reading breaches them — while the shipment is still moving. If the network drops, data is stored on-device and auto-uploads on reconnection, so the record stays complete.
Where real-time wins:
- Someone can intervene: reroute, re-ice or repack before damage spreads across the pallet.
- High-value cargo: pharmaceuticals, biologics, premium seafood.
- Multimodal lanes with handoffs, where liability shifts between carriers.
- Customers who expect shipment-level visibility links.
How USB loggers work
A USB logger records on-device for the whole journey. At destination, anyone plugs it into a computer: the PDF/CSV report generates automatically — no software, no app, no account. Single-use versions cost a fraction of real-time units and require no retrieval; reusable versions come back and get redeployed.
Where USB wins:
- One-way food shipments where the report is an acceptance document, not a live feed.
- High-volume programs where per-unit cost dominates.
- Lanes with no intervention option anyway (the report is for claims and process improvement).
- Receivers who want zero training: plug in, read the verdict.
The cost question, honestly
Per shipment, USB is cheaper — often by an order of magnitude. Per decision saved, real-time pays for itself the first time an alert lets you save a pallet. A pragmatic rule many of our customers use: real-time for the lanes where intervention is possible and the cargo value justifies it, USB everywhere else.
Our lineup covers both: the ZTAG-20GTH-LI / ZLOG-20GTH-LI real-time family for live tracking, and the ZTAG-EU / ZLOG series for plug-and-read USB workflows. Not sure which fits? Send us the lane — we will tell you honestly, including when the cheaper option is the right one.
